Bandar Seri Begawan, 18 March 2023 - The Philippine Embassy in Brunei Darussalam held a music concert and wellness workshop called “Music to Heal” to commemorate National Women’s Month on 18 March 2023.  The evening highlighted the health and wellness benefits of music through the virtuosity of the Brunei Music Society (BMS).

According to Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Marian Jocelyn R. Tirol-Ignacio, the workshop was a response to the unequal impact of gender on the alarming statistics that non-communicable diseases, particularly heart disease, stroke and cancer were the leading causes of death around the world, in the Philippines and in Brunei, including the Filipino migrant community in the Sultanate.  She said, “As women we are socialized to care for the health and welfare of others but not our own.”

Ambassador Tirol-Ignacio cited the Filipinos’ reputation in music and their progress in closing gender gaps. Since the World Economic Forum launched the Global Gender Gap Report in 2006, the Philippines has consistently remained in the top 20 of the index. The Ambassador expressed hope the workshop will inspire and empower the “women only” audience to empower themselves, to make informed decisions about their health and well-being using music as tools for wellness.

The one hour workshop was facilitated by Dr. Malai Zeiti binti Sheikh Abdul Hamid, Head of the Wellness Research Thrust at Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB).  She introduced science-based ideas and concepts on the promotion of health and wellness through music, from self-expression in song and singing in groups, to the benefits of chanting and lullabies, to using music to calm down and de-stress, to creating a meaningful personal playlist for every need and occasion.

The highlight of the evening were the outstanding performances of the Brunei Music Society (BMS).  A diverse range of musical pieces, from a classical vocal solo from La Boheme to the popular “Theme of Super Mario Brothers” played by the BMS Violin Trio were presented to the delight of the audience. The music chosen for the workshop demonstrated the concepts shared in the workshop.

The Embassy regularly conducts Gender and Development (GAD) activities that promote gender equity for the benefit of Filipinos in Brunei. It also held a special flag raising ceremony at the chancery and launched a breast-feeding station and children’s lounge at the Consular Section on 8 March to commemorate 2023 International Women’s Day and National Women’s Month.  END
