President Ferdinand Marcos Jr welcomed Her Excellency Megawati Dato Paduka Haji Manan, Ambassador of Brunei Darussalam to the Philippines, during a presentation of credentials ceremony in Malacañang Palace on 23 March 2023.
He thanked Brunei Darussalam for its support in bringing stability to Mindanao and hoped that Brunei will continue to provide assistance in uplifting the living conditions of the people of the southern Philippine island.
Ambassador Megawati Dato Paduka Haji Manan expressed that it would certainly be Brunei’s direction to increase the level of cooperation with Mindanao in light of its commonalities with Brunei.
The President and the Ambassador of Brunei also emphasized the importance of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in resolving regional issues, and the Philippine President stated that ASEAN still remains the “most important mover for all of what we attempt diplomatically in terms of the conflicts that we are seeing”.
Diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Brunei Darussalam began in 1984 and cooperation between the two nations has grown steadily in the areas of politics, economy, defence, and culture. END
